Yesterday we had the first real snow of the season here in Connecticut, and it was absolutely beautiful. Whenever it snows, I love to bake, warm up the kitchen, and fill the house with sweet scents! So, yesterday, I made myself a cup of peppermint tea and decided to whip up some Chocolate Chunk Tea Party Scones!
This scone was the first real, from-scratch sweet that I ever baked! I must have been about 12 years old then. To this day, it’s my family’s favorite recipe of mine, and a favorite of mine, as well! They’re not terribly difficult to make, and when you take the scones out of the oven, they’re flaky, soft, and filled with decadent chocolate chunks. One of the main ingredients in this recipe is buttermilk! It’s not every day that you find a recipe calling for buttermilk, but in this recipe, it’s crucial. It’s what gives the scones their trademark flakiness. Make sure you actually go out and buy buttermilk for this recipe, and don’t make a substitute with milk and vinegar – this recipe calls for the real deal.

You may have seen it on my Instagram (@julietssweets), but for the holidays this year, I received a bunch of beautiful baking supplies, including this pan. This was the most thoughtful present from my parents, and I just wanted to publicly say thank you for such an amazing holiday season – not just for the presents, but for making the whole season bright!
One of my favorite parts about these scones are the amazing chocolate chunks. I used dark chocolate chunks from Whole Foods (my favorite grocery store!), and mixed them generously into the dough. Then, after forming the scones, I pressed a few more chunks onto the top of each one! You can never have too much chocolate, in my book.
There’s another great picture of the pan. You can see the little, hand-painted squirrel in the bottom right corner – it doesn’t get much cuter than that. When you’re baking the scones, make sure you bake them until the edges are lightly browned – there’s nothing worse than biting into a scone and finding it too soft and under baked.

Chocolate Chunk Tea Party Scones
Prep time: 15 minutes
Cook time: 15 minutes
Yield: 10-12 scones
- 3 cups all-purpose flour
- 1/3 cup sugar
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 2 1/2 teaspoons baking powder
- 3/4 teaspoon salt
- 1 1/2 sticks unsalted butter, softened and cut into 1-inch squares
- 1 cup dark chocolate chunks
- 1 1/4 cups buttermilk
- 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
- 1/4 cup heavy cream
- 1/4 cup sugar
- Preheat the oven to 425*F, and combine the first 5 ingredients in the bowl of a stand mixer.
- Add in the butter, and turn the mixer on medium-low until the mixture has the consistency of breadcrumbs. Don’t over-mix.
- Make a divot in the center of the dry ingredients, and pour in the buttermilk and vanilla. Mix on medium-low until all of the mixture is wet, but make sure not to over-mix. That will give you tough, overly chewy scones.
- Turn the mixture out onto a floured surface, and roll it into a large ball. Then, flatten it out until it’s about 1 inch in thickness overall – about the size of a large dinner plate. Don’t knead the dough too much here!
- Cut out 10-12 scones (in a wedge shape) with a pizza cutter, making diagonal cuts across the round. Place the scones on a greased baking sheet.
- Brush the top of each scone liberally with heavy cream, and then sprinkle each scone with sugar, for some sparkle. Bake them for about 15 minutes, or until the edges are lightly browned, and serve them warm! Enjoy!
